The Modulus Function

The Modulus Function
  • We've already seen the modulus function in Core Pure 1.
  • It makes negative numbers positive.
  • E.G. \(|-1|=1\)
\(|3x-5|=2-\frac{1}{2}x\)
  • Draw \(y=|3x-5|\) and \(y=2-\frac{1}{2x}\)
  • Find the first point: \(3x-5=2-\frac{1}{2}x\)
  • \(\frac{7}{2}x=7\)
  • \(x=2\)
  • \(y=1\)
  • Invert the modulus equation to find the reflection of the line:
  • \(-3x+5=2-\frac{1}{2}x\)
  • \(-6x+10=4-x\)
  • \(-5x=-6\)
  • \(x=\frac{6}{5}\)
